Who Is McM?

Greetings and Welcome!

Heather McMahan Sculpture

McM is an abbreviation of my last name, McMahan. I am often introduced as Heather McMahan, the Artist, which always surprises me considering I have refused to adhere to the conventional standards and definitions of the Artistic Industry in general. I can offer no exotic rhetoric to explain myself or what I produce creatively. I must confess I have no patience for instruction or the study of any methods. I just picked up a piece of clay a couple years ago and started.

"Creating is much like giving birth: I represent little more than a vessel."

This experience led me to notice other “self-taught” artists which left me wanting a new definition for the word Artist itself. See heathermcmahanart.com and read about “Honest Art” and “Honest Artists.

I am propelled by a passionate dedication to my County and a great appreciation for the freedoms I enjoy as an American. I think my blood must run not just red, but white and blue as well…could the fact that I was born on June 14th, Flag Day, have something to do with it?

Perhaps it’s because I grew up in Spain while Franco was Dictator and was a NY resident on 9-11; I understand what it is to live without certain freedoms and under the attack of entities that would like to deprive us of ours permanently.

My fascination with other cultures (I speak 4 other languages fluently) only lasts long enough to acquire an understanding and appreciation for them, and I find myself yearning to return to American Soil.

Fondly,

L. Heather McMahan
