Artist's Intent

As a New York resident the day of the September 11 attacks, I was able to see, feel, and hear the horrors of terrorism. Our city became a war zone. Safety and freedom were now recognized as precious rights we could no longer take for granted.

The intent of this piece is to set political positions aside for a moment, and recognize the people who have and are, serving this Nation in combat.

Empathy comes easily for those of us who know how fragile our safety and freedom can be; these feelings, I imagine, are shared equally by those in combat as by those in the midst of a terrorist attack.

These clay reproductions of dessert issue combat gear were formed and arranged to appear somewhat hastily removed by their owner, who no longer needs them because he or she has been given leave, if only for a short period of time.

It is my way of saying “THANK YOU”; “WELCOME HOME”; and “GODSPEED” to our men and women in the armed forces; and if I am fortunate enough, it will be noticed by some as they pass through this airport either coming home or on the way back to the field.

Yours truly,

L. Heather McMahan
